The Lie of Productivity

How Busyness is Distracting You from True Progress

If you measure your success by how busy you are, you’re missing the point. We live in a culture that glorifies busyness, but here’s the secret: being busy isn’t the same as being productive. In fact, busyness often distracts us from making real progress.

I remember a time early in my career when I was hustling from one task to the next. I was running my consulting business, working long hours, managing multiple projects, and constantly moving from meeting to meeting. I thought I was killing it. I was busy, and that meant I was being productive, right?

Wrong.

It wasn’t until I hit a wall—physically and emotionally exhausted—that I realized all that busyness wasn’t moving me forward. Sure, I was checking off tasks, but I wasn’t making meaningful progress. I was so focused on being "productive" that I lost sight of what really mattered: making an impact, not just staying busy.

Here’s what I learned:

  • Busy is the enemy of progress. Being busy gives us the illusion of productivity, but if you’re not moving toward your goals, you’re just spinning your wheels.
  • Focus is the real key to success. When you stop trying to do everything and start focusing on the few things that truly matter, that’s when you’ll see real progress.
  • Efficiency ≠ Effectiveness. You can be efficient at getting things done, but if you’re not doing the right things, you’re not being effective.

So, here’s my challenge to you: stop glorifying busyness. Instead, focus on what truly matters. Identify the few key actions that will move the needle in your life and business, and put your energy there.

Because progress isn’t about how many tasks you complete—it’s about how much closer you are to your goals.
